In 1942 Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido as it exists today, realised that martial arts should not be used for warring, but for peace. Learning the martial art of Aikido means learning about oneself, increasing one’s self awareness and awareness of others.
To perform effective Aikido we learn to blend with the attacker’s movement rather than trying to block it. Learning to keep balanced and centred is an essential part of Aikido. Keeping good balance while moving and performing Aikido techniques translates directly into keeping your balance in day to day life.
